Case Study:
Size and Scope of the Queensland Racing Industry

Racing Queensland manages the three racing codes in the Sunshine State, overseeing the commercial aspects of the industry, working closely with racing clubs, and promoting the sport.
Since 2010, IER has partnered with Racing Queensland to conduct regular economic and social assessments of the Queensland racing industry. These studies highlight not only the industry’s economic value and job creation but also its broader community impact, including capacity building, charitable contributions, historical significance, volunteerism, facility sharing, and education and training initiatives.
To measure economic impacts, IER uses an input-output methodology and collaborated with Racing Queensland and local clubs to gather the data that underpins both the economic and social impact assessments.
Over the medium term, the racing industry’s contribution to Queensland’s economy has more than doubled, rising from $1.2 billion in FY16 to $2.5 billion in FY24. Full-time employment in the industry has also increased, with jobs rising from 9,500 to nearly 14,500, a 53% growth. Participant numbers continue to expand, with almost 50,000 presently engaged in the Queensland racing industry.
